School Library System (SLS)
This Erie 1 BOCES service is a continuing program that provides professional development for school library media specialists and facilitates interlibrary loan requests between participating member schools and local regional BOCES. The accessibility of interlibrary loan increases the availability of library resources to learners and teaching staff.
This service promotes the sharing of peripheral specialized collections. As a requirement to participation in the School Library System (SLS) service, all participating members must agree to loan library materials, provide monthly statistical information in a timely manner for the current school year, appoint a district designated Communication Coordinator to the SLS (as per commissioner's regulations) and provide time for Communication Coordinator functions.
Membership in your local BOCES SLS is a prerequisite for the library automation service. Funded by New York State, this service is offered at no charge to districts and non-public schools in the membership.
The School Library System (SLS) provides members with resources and assistance to library services, promotes information literacy for students and supports the New York State Learning Standards. Student access to information is expanded through an SLS structure that enriches both physical and technological access through regional library network connections to school, public, college and special libraries.
Active membership in consortia groups increase information content by promoting the cooperative purchase of full text resources. Links to the NYS Library offer access to statewide resources. The SLS Office encourages the development of NOVELNY-Ready library levels of service through staff development targeting library media specialists and library consultation services.
SLS membership is open to public school districts and non-public schools within the Erie 1 BOCES region.
